Janet L. Holmgren was appointed in 1991 as President
of Mills College and Susan Mills Professor, a title
reserved for presidents who teach. She earned her PhD
in Linguistics from Princeton University. Prior to
coming to Mills, President Holmgren was vice provost
of Princeton University where she also taught in the
English Department. She has also held administrative
and faculty positions at the University of Maryland
College Park and the University of the District of
Columbia.
Under her leadership, Mills has undertaken
major diversity initiatives enhancing the curriculum,
recruiting students of color to comprise over one third
of the student body, and increasing faculty of color
to 25% (up from 3% in 1991). Through successful fundraising
and sound financial management, Mills has grown
the endowment from $70 to $230 million, resulting in
major increases for financial aid, academic programming,
and facilities expansion, including the new Natural
Sciences Building dedicated to the advancement of women
in science.
President Holmgren serves on the Boards
of the National Council for Research on Women, the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching,
the Association of Independent California Colleges
and Universities, and Princeton University.
